The residents have never had a dearth of getaway places from the hustle and bustle of the city. But did you know the city has a mysterious cave which is hidden in plain sight? Situated at the Jangli Maharaj Road, Pataleshwar Caves are one of the oldest structures existing in the city.

One Of The Most Ancient Historical Structure In The City


The Pataleshwar Caves dates back to the 8th century. Can you believe that something as old as the tale of time is still standing tall and tangible right in front of you? The name if bifurcated means, ‘Patal’ i.e. underworld and ‘Eshwar’ means god and it is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The vibe of the place is so soothing that time will just pass you by. 

Legends Attached To The Cave

According to folklore, the temple was built by the Pandavas during their exile and miraculously in just a few hours when they needed shelter. While another theory suggests that its makers saw a faulty line and was abandoned while the temple was still being carved. Thus, giving it an unfinished vibe. But all of these still remain a mystery and there are many caves yet to be dug up. The place is being maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India and is a representation of the city’s heritage. 

Architectural Wonder

For anyone who gets hypnotised by the structure and ancient architecture, this place will knock your socks off. Astonishingly, the cave has been carved out of single basalt rock and you can find fine craftsmanship and delicate carving on all of these structures. If you look closely and have an eye of an expert, you can easily notice the similarities between the architecture of Pataleshwar Temple and Elephanta caves. Intriguing, ain’t it?   

A Place To Meditate And Soak In Some Tranquillity 


The place has something to offer for everyone who visits it. You can often find people reading and chilling will their peers or some even head there to meditate. The structures have been constructed in a way that they act as soundproofing barriers and even though the cave is right on the road, you can transit into the zen mode and savour a moment of peace. Needless to mention, the place is so well maintained that the tall ancient trees work as the perfect backdrop for photography. I promise you, this place has the frame that you have been yearning for.

For those of you who might want to visit the place for spiritual reasons, you will be intrigued to know that the place has a shrine of Lord Shiva and a beautiful idol of Nandi too. Other than this, statues of various other Hindu deities are also here such as Sita, Lakshmi, Ram and Lakshman. Feel free to indulge in spirituality while exploring the place.
