Post India’s independence in 1947, there were 562 princely states. Most of the states acceded to India. Many of these princely states were transformed into new states. Later, with the States Reorganization Act of 1956, Indian states were arranged linguistically. Hence, it becomes important to know which states were formed when. The topic, ‘Indian States Formation Dates’ envisages listing down the foundation days of the Indian States and UTs. This article will give further information on the Reorganization of States.

Note – 

  1. Goa, Puducherry, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, and Sikkim were not a part of India at the time of independence. 
  2. Puducherry along with Karaikal, Mahe, and Yanam, was transferred to India in 1954 by the French.
  3. Dadra & Nagar Haveli were liberated in 1954 from the Portuguese. Similarly, Goa was liberated from Portuguese occupation in 1961.
  4.  Sikkim became a part of India in 1974.
